WASHINGTON (AP) -- Students from across the country are heading to Washington to face off in the National Geographic Bee to test their smarts in a battle of world knowledge.

The preliminary rounds Tuesday include 54 students representing each state, the District of Columbia, Defense Department schools and U.S. territories. The top 10 finalists win $500 and move on to the finals Wednesday.

Eight students in this year's bee are repeat state winners. They are Alex Kimn of South Dakota, Isabella Contolini of Colorado, Stefan Petrovic of Kansas, James Anthony Stoner of Louisiana, Jacob Tanner of Michigan, Joshua Vogel of Missouri, Tine Valencic of Texas and Anthony Cheng of Utah.

Alex Trebek from TV's "Jeopardy!" hosts the final rounds.

The bee is taped for broadcast on National Geographic Channel and public TV stations.
