This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
It seems like every town has one. You know, that place where all the locals come to hang out. In Park City it happens to be Wasatch Bagel and Grill. But it's not just locals who love this shop.
At any given time, owner Kreg Van Stralen says Wasatch Bagel is hosting a diverse group of customers. You can literally find billionaires hanging out with ski bums. This is also the first stop for many skiers coming to Park City to experience the greatest snow on earth. It's been around for almost 15 years, and Kreg is working on extending his hours to be open 24 hours a day.
He has a healthy respect for tourism which contributes almost $600 million to the Park City economy every year. Eight percent of that goes to eating and drinking, which includes Wasatch Bagel and Grill.
Let me just tell you about the father-daughter duo running this shop. Kreg and his daughter, Chelsea, have been in the restaurant business together for years. They have successfully built many restaurants together, the majority of those from the ground up. After selling one of Utah's most successful hamburger chains, they were looking for an established business they could purchase and build up. Wasatch Bagel and Grill provided the perfect opportunity.
Kreg and Chelsea have expanded the menu to include a full-service grill most known for the quality food, especially the hamburgers and French dip sandwiches. The restaurant also has great ambiance with windows that overlook Park City Ski Resort. It's not unusual to see celebrities in the shop, and the walls are covered with pictures of those who've visited.
In the last few years, Kreg says it's been interesting to watch Utahns discover the beauty of Park City for themselves. He's received so much business that summers at Wasatch Bagel and Grill are now just as busy as winter. He attributes much of the success of this bagel, coffee shop and grill to the engagement of his crew who have been with him for years.
