SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Bills being considered by Utah lawmakers this week range from a plan to let voters cast ballots as much as two weeks before Election Day to one that would allow minors to be emancipated from their parents.
Compared with previous weeks, the pace at which bills are handled is expected slow considerably as debates on major issues become more intense.
Beginning Tuesday, the Legislature will debate bills twice a day. Each year, a number of bills approved in one chamber never make it out of the other by the time the 45-day session ends.
That's what happened last year to a House bill that would have made torturing an animal a felony. A similar bill is up for consderation in the House again.
A bill already on hold is one that passed the House last week eliminating the sales tax on food.
