Sam Penrod ReportingYet another massive retail development is planned for Utah County; this time Pleasant Grove will be the home to an outdoor style, upscale shopping center.
A national developer plans to turn 106 acres into an open-air style shopping, dining and entertainment center. Tonight, city leaders are getting a look at the plans, which they say will make Pleasant Grove the new center of Utah County.
The open field just off of the Pleasant Grove interchange will soon become a new retail development. Construction is scheduled to begin in just weeks.
Michael Daniels, Mayor of Pleasant Grove: "We have the fantastic opportunity to bring in a premier outdoor lifestyle center, with all the types of amenities the citizens are looking for -- shopping experience, dining experience and the entertainment."
According to Westwood Development Group's website, the project will be marketed as "Sundance Commons." On their web site, the company has artist renditions of what the one million square foot development will look like. It will include open air shopping as well as major big box stores.
Michael Daniels, Mayor of Pleasant Grove: "We are going to be right in the center of Utah County, where the western freeway comes in I-15 and intersects. This is a tremendous place for commercial offices, for retail establishments and for light industrial."
Back in November, Lehi announced a similar type development near Cabelas. The Terrace at Traverse Mountain will be 50 acres larger; however, it is not scheduled to be open for another three years.
Pleasant Grove leaders believe that with all of the growth along the Wasatch Front, especially Utah County, the developer will make Sundance Commons successful.
Michael Daniels, Mayor of Pleasant Grove: "They have several hundred of these type of facilities around the us. They've done their market research, they understand what they are getting into."
There is no word yet on which stores will anchor the project. Groundbreaking is scheduled for later this spring and construction should be underway by this summer.
