HOLLADAY -- A 1st grader in Holladay and 12th grader in Bear River are in the running to win thousands of dollars for their school.
Google came to 1st grader Leah Smith's school, Howard R. Driggs Elementary, Wednesday afternoon to announce her as one of 40 regional finalists in the Doodle 4 Google competition.
The annual competition, open to K-12 students across the U.S., challenged students to design a Google logo inspired by the theme "What I'd Like to Do Someday."
For Leah, caterpillars and butterflies seemed like the best idea for the theme because, in her words, "Someday I want to witness a miracle."
Bear River High School senior Alonzo Rhodes called his doodle "Reading: Share the Adventure." His his description, Alonzo said, "Books are a gateway to the imagination. You can go anywhere when you read a book, as for your mind will let you go from the depths of the sea to parallel universes. Someday, I want to see reading touch every corner of the globe, be available to everyone."
The winner's doodle be displayed on the google.com homepage. The champion will also get $15,000 in scholarship money and up to a $25,000 technology grant for art education at their school.
