(KSL News) -- Violent crimes are a growing problem in Utah, and more than 90 percent of the victims know their attacker. Statistics like that urged First Lady Mary Kaye Huntsman to add dating dangers to her Power In You campaign.
In a kickoff event at Murray High School, Huntsman partnered with ReAL Salt Lake players and abuse advocates to educate students about how dangerous an abusive relationship can be.
Barbara Higgins, Sandy City Police Dept.: “Unfortunately, we see a lot of times where kids think it is acceptable. They don't recognize what a healthy relationship should be and so they stay in these relationships where they are being belittled and manipulated."
ReAL teammates Jamie Watson and Leslie "Tiger" Fitzpatrick joined the campaign as ambassadors. Watson and Fitzpatrick will speak at assemblies across the state in an effort to prevent dating violence.
