SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is awarding two Utah Indian tribes $1.5 million.
HUD says the money will be used by the tribes to improve housing and economic opportunities in their communities.
The Northwestern Band of the Shoshones in Brigham City will receive $600,000. The Paiutes in Cedar City will receive $900,000.
HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan says the money helps Native American leaders improve the living and economic conditions for people on their lands.
Grant money can be used to build or restore housing, develop commercial centers or expand medical facilities. It can also be used for improvements to infrastructure, including sewer or water facilities and roads.
The grants are distributed through the Indian Community Development Block Grant program.
