Brooke Walker ReportingA fire today destroyed part of a home on 3300 South, but the homeowner says all that was damaged can be fixed or replaced.
Dave Herrick was doing some remodeling this morning. He placed adhesive tubes in the oven to get warm and returned a little bit later to find the kitchen in flames. But his mind wasn't on the fire, or even the danger.
Dave Herrick: "I was devastated. I don't have the words to say, I was in shock."
Shocked and also heartsick to realize his prized puppy was somewhere inside the burning house. Herrick frantically turned over beds and couches, but eventually the smoke was so black and consuming, he could barely see. He reluctantly got out, but was devastated to not have his two-month old schnauzer, Rosie, by his side.
Dave Herrick: "She's just got my heart. I've fallen in love with her."
A firefighter came to Rosie's rescue and helped revive the dog, who was transported to a nearby animal hospital. A little bit of oxygen and a vet visit later, Rosie was back with her very relieved owner.
Estimated damages are at about 70-thousand dollars, but Herrick says that seems like pennies in comparison to what he could have lost.
