SALT LAKE CITY — About a dozen high school students were issued tickets for trespassing and disturbing the peace after conducting a "die-in" at two downtown businesses Wednesday.
Just before 11 p.m., police responded to Walgreens, 909 E. 2100 South, on a report of up to 40 people — mainly students from Highland High School — lying on the floor in the aisles pretending they were dead, said Salt Lake Police Sgt. Shawn Josephson.
The group then moved over to Smith's, 922 E. 2100 South, and again laid down and acted as if they were dead.
"We responded and told them to leave," he said.
Most of the group dispersed at that point but 11 teens and one adult refused to go, Josephson said. They were all issued tickets for trespassing, a class B misdemeanor, and disturbing the peace, an infraction.
One of the students involved tells KSL News they did not refuse to leave. He said the officers made them stay in order to issue the tickets.
Investigators did not know Thursday what the motive was behind the "die-in" or if the group was trying to promote any particular agenda.
