(KSL News) -- Taking back the net is a hot topic today in Salt Lake.
Special interest groups joined forces with Attorney General Mark Shurtleff to teach Utahns how to protect themselves on line.
The main focus of the event is identity theft. New statistics show it's the nation's fastest growing crime. About one in four households have been victimized by I-D theft in the last five years.
Authorities say it's possible to be safe on the net.
Craig Spiezle, Director of Online Safety for Microsoft Corporation: "Nothing's 100- percent today, but I think with safe practices and good judgment, people can remain safe online."
Experts offered tips against cyber threats, like hackers, spam, viruses, spyware, and phishing scams.
