John Daley ReportingPolice say they have some leads but no arrests yet in a fatal auto-pedestrian accident that happened early Sunday morning. It's the kind of accident we seem to be seeing a lot of lately, an auto-ped that's also a hit and run. This latest accident happened a little before 2:00 am Sunday morning, at about State Street and 900 South.
Police say a motorist hit two men crossing the street. One of the men died. The two men in their 30's were crossing the street, not in a crosswalk, when they were hit. Other cars had stopped to let them cross.
One man, 31-year-old Victor Gutierrez-Flores, died at the scene. The other, Jesus Espinoza, age 38, was hospitalized in serious condition.
Dwayne Baird, Salt Lake City Police: "We had witnesses who saw this accident. People, even though these individuals were not in the crosswalk, people had stopped and slowed down because they saw these guys. It was just the one car that struck them that didn't stop in the roadway. SO we didi have witnesses that we're following up with."
The suspect car is described as a dark colored four door sedan with tinted windows. It has a Utah license plate and police know there were three numbers and then the letters HT.
The accident happened on one of Utah's busiest streets, State Street. Police advise pedestrians to cross at the lights and use the city's orange flags.
