SALT LAKE CITY — Smith’s Food & Drug stores announced Monday a new rewards program that could save customers up to $1 per gallon on gasoline. The new fuel program enhances Smith’s rewards card program by allowing customers to use their rewards points for discounts at any Smith’s or participating Shell fueling stations.

Currently, 27 Shell stations and 36 Smith's stations are located in Utah.

According to Marsha Gilford, vice president of public affairs for Smith's Food & Drug Stores, customers can now choose to redeem rewards points and save at the pump today or hold onto rewards points and save later through their personalized gold envelope rewards mailing at the end of each quarter.

This is a game-changer in the industry. There is no one else that has a relationship with the number one grocer - with Shell, the number one (fuel) retailer in the country,

–Larry Jacobs, Shell Oil.

"For every $100 that you spend with us (when buying groceries with your rewards card), you get 10 cents off a gallon … that accumulates up to a dollar (per gallon for a maximum 35 gallons)," she said.

Gilford noted that any rewards points not used toward fuel savings will be converted to a personalized rewards check mailed along with coupons to Smith’s rewards customers each quarter.

Customers may also redeem their rewards points at participating Shell stations by using their Smith’s rewards card at the pump, manually entering their card number or entering their alternate ID, which will initiate the fuel savings.

"This is a game-changer in the industry. There is no one else that has a relationship with the number one grocer … with Shell, the number one (fuel) retailer in the country," said Larry Jacobs, Shell Oil national accounts manager. "We've done a fantastic job (with the partnership) in many other markets and we're excited about doing it here in Salt Lake."

As an incentive, any Smith’s customer using a rewards card for any single purchase made from April 13 to April 19 will be automatically credited with 200 extra points, which may be redeemed as 20 cents per gallon in fuel savings or saved toward their quarterly rewards mailing.

Customers can visit their “My Smith’s” page at www.smithsfoodanddrug.com to check their total rewards point status at any time. Fifty additional points are earned through prescription purchases, a news release stated.

Original Fresh Values cards will not be honored in fuel programs and should be converted to a rewards card to receive fuel and point certificate benefits.
