SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Students in Rich County will only be going to school four days a week under a recent decision by the State Board of Education.

The board voted to grant Rich a waiver from a state policy requiring that districts hold school for 180 days each year.

Rich is a rural district in the farthest northern reaches of Utah and students must travel long distances for school activities, especially sporting events. That's led to a lot of students missing school on Fridays and needing substitute teachers to cover for instructors with coaching assignments.

Rich's superintendent says a four day week allows students to continue to participate in sports and provide better educational opportunities with certified teachers. The state board's decision is valid for three years.
