(KSL News) A suspected car thief tried to run away from deputies, but he couldn't fool a police dog.
Police say the man stole a car early yesterday. Late last night, a Sheriff's deputy pulled him over for an unrelated reason, not knowing the car was stolen. When he ran a check on the license plate, the plate didn't match the car, so he tried to arrest the driver.
The driver took off, then tried to hide by climbing underneath a rental truck sitting in a parking lot. A K-9 unit went looking for him and one of the dogs sniffed him out.
Lt. Chris Bertram, SLC Sheriff's Office: "They're just a great tool that we in law enforcement can use. We've got some really good dogs. They've made several finds lately on some very bad people."
Officers found drugs on Danny Petty, which he admitted to taking. Petty has been charged with car theft and narcotics possession.
