Brooke Walker ReportingWhat seemed liked a routine pickup for a cab driver turned out to be far from normal. That's because the supposed customer pulled out a gun.
Authorities say this is starting to look familiar and it's happening in a familiar area.
Last night's robbery happened at 7th South and 4th West, where at least four robberies have occurred in the last month.
Around 2 am someone called a cab and requested pick-up at a Salt Lake apartment complex. The driver pulled up and parked, assuming it was just another job. But it quickly became evident this "customer" had no intention of going anywhere.
A well-dressed man approached the car window, pulled out a gun and demanded money. The cabbie handed it over and the suspect took off, running back toward the complex.
Police say they find the target of this trend unusual.
Lt. Sandra Urry, SLCPD: "Cab drivers are just hard working people. They carry very little money with them and it's a very aggressive crime."
That cab driver was not injured, but was pretty shaken up.
Police describe the suspect as a white male in his mid-twenties, about five foot seven, thin build and light brown hair.
Police have heard this description before...
Robyn Snyder, Salt Lake Police Dept.: "Similar descriptions in both of them. At the same address, the same mo, the cab driver was called to the scene, arrived and that's when he was robbed by the suspect."
They will be reviewing all of the past robberies, in hopes of making some sort of connection.
Again, an unusual crime. Not a lot of cash is even carried in the cabs, but with so many drivers out on the streets, authorities are concerned.
We talked to local cab drivers this morning who told us this is a section of town they try to avoid.
Anyone with more information should contact Salt Lake Police Department.
