SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utahns set a new record for bankruptcy filings in 2005.
Last year, nearly 22-thousand filed for bankruptcy. That's an increase of six percent.
The majority of the filings occurred in early October as people rushed to file before a new tough federal bankruptcy law took affect. More than 56-hundred Utahns filed for bankruptcy that month.
Following the October rush, only three-hundred and 40 Utah residents filed bankruptcy in November and December.
However, Utah bankruptcy officials says filings will likely pick up again toward the end of March or April of this year.
Utah leads the nation in bankruptcy filings as one in every 37 households file for bankruptcy.
