SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- L-D-S Hospital is now one of only 160 hospitals in the country that are certified as a primary stroke center.

The hospital was recently certified by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. It means L-D-S Hospital now provides stroke care based on national best-practice protocols to ensure stroke patients get optimal care.

It's also only the second hospital in Utah to receive the certification, University Hospital was the first. The certification comes after five years of effort by the multidisciplinary stroke team at the hospital.

L-D-S Hospital treats more than three-hundred stroke patients every year. Strokes are the number three cause of death in the United States, and around 700-thousand Americans have a stroke every year.
