(KSL News) -- They spent nearly a year at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba serving their country. Today, eight members of the 128th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment of the Utah National Guard received honors.
Each received a "Freedom Service Award" for their work in support of "Operation Enduring Freedom.
Maj. Gen. Brian G. Tarbet: "For your service in the past, I thank you. For what you did during deployment, I thank you. And to you family members and to you children, thank you for sharing your parents, thank you for missing your dad or your mom on your birthday or Christmastime."
SSGT. Cavett Ishihara, 128th Public Affairs Detachment: "It's great to come home, but it's even nice to be recognized by your peers and the Utah National Guard for serving for such a long time."
Members of the unit were responsible for escorting national and international media representatives at the Guantanamo base; as well as writing newspaper articles and producing radio and TV stories for military media outlets.
