(KSL News) Search and rescue crews training in American Fork canyon got to handle a real rescue today when a snowmobiler was in trouble.

The group was training in the Silver Lake area when a snowmobiler found them and said his friend was hurt. Apparently he'd rolled his snowmobile and it slid down the hill, pinning him against a tree.

Rescuers say the snowmobiler was fortunate that they were so close with all the equipment, otherwise it could have taken at least a half hour for them to get to the canyon.

There was also another danger he could have faced.

Sgt. Tom Hodgson/ Search & Rescue: "Once the snow starts to heat up, you have the chance of wet slide avalanches on slopes above 30 degrees. So it's something people need to take proper equipment, have avalanche beacons, ropes, shovels."

The snowmobiler was flown to University of Utah hospital in critical condition.
