Nishi Gupta reporting Neighbors express their shock finding themselves on the scene of a terrible car wreck right outside their Sandy homes.
"I couldn't believe it was happening right in front of our house. It was very scary. I just felt bad for those kids."
Last night's car crash sent four young people to the hospital. All four are in critical condition tonight.
Last night, six friends crammed into a car. They were headed west on 8600 South, near 1000 East. That's when police say the driver tried to pass a car, lost control and crashed into a parked car.
Neighbors say scene was chaotic. There was a lot of people and a lot of debris. You can even see the markings of the police investigation, like the word bump, from one of the car's bumpers, and the trail of the speeding car that set all of this into motion.
Vicki Ross/ Witness: "We heard this 'boom.' I was worried. I thought, 'Oh my gosh, there's been an accident.'"
Vicki Ross opened her front door to see a disturbing scene-- two mangled cars. Luckily one was unoccupied. Unfortunately, the other had six kids in it.
Vicki Ross/ Witness: "The one girl was really, really scared. She kept saying, 'Help me.' And I'm like, 'We can't. There's no way.' They were pinned in the car."
Shannon Clarke heard the accident from her home, too. She saw the driver and the front passenger distraught, but able to walk out of the car. So she went to the backseat to help the other four, who were trapped.
She says she held a girl's head for about 15 minutes, trying to stop the bleeding and keep her conscious.
Shannon Clarke/Witness: "I was like, 'What's her name? What's her name?' They said Melissa. I was like, 'Melissa, stay with me.' Her eyes eventually rolled back and she closed her eyes."
Paramedics arrived shortly after that, and four of the kids were taken to area hospitals. Two of them had to be airlifted. The other two teens were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Neighbors say this accident is the worst they've seen, but they are no strangers to the high speeds on 8600 South. They tell us they constantly see and hear cars cruising this road much faster than the posted 35 miles per hour.
Vicki Ross/ Witness: "My grandma's car has been hit in the driveway. We've had our house hit two times. They've taken out trees."
Shannon Clarke/Witness: "People crash here all the time. During the summer especially, you can hear kids racing up and down the hill. In my heart, please don't let me hear a wreck, please don't let me hear a wreck."
Police say they will not release the names and ages of the kids until their investigation wraps up. They say the driver may face charges.
They also say if he was trying to pass another car, it would have been illegal to do so because there is a double yellow line.
