Samantha Hayes Reporting A man is in the hospital after leading Utah Highway Patrol on a chase that ended with troopers forcing him off the road last night. Troopers say the man was intoxicated and they had to take action to prevent an accident.
It ended at 900 south and 200 east, and when it ended 43-year old Samuel Case had to be taken to the hospital. Utah Highway Patrol says he was drunk. And was not wearing a seatbelt.
The chase started when the man jumped a curb and a sidewalk and nearly hit a building downtown.
Sgt. Martin Turner, UHP: "As I walked up, the driver fled the area. The pursuit began from 1300 south and 300 west."
The chase continued for five minutes and five or six miles through Salt Lake City. Trooper Martin Turner says the average speed was 65, sometimes 70 miles per hour, and through intersections where people sometimes cross.
Sgt. Turner: "He failed to yield at a red light with some cross traffic, at which point elevated my concern for the hazard he was presenting. Initially running off the road, now a total disregard for anything as we traveled along."
But the man would not pull over.
Sgt. Turner: "Determined I would use a pit maneuver to stop him, slid off the road and hit a tree.
The man hit his head on the dashboard when his truck spun out of control.
