SALT LAKE CITY — School districts will be allowed to generate revenue for transportation costs under a bill that allows advertising on school buses.
The legislation failed in the House earlier in the session due to safety and ad content concerns, but was brought back a few weeks later when the sponsor amended it. It passed the Senate on Wednesday.
HB199 allows for an ad to occupy no more than 35 percent of the side of a bus, with no ads allowed on the front or back. Local school boards would be responsible for developing guidelines for what ads would be appropriate. Districts must also use the money to fund transportation for students.
The legislation awaits the governor's signature.
