Two new knitting DVDs by Tricoast Studios are becoming quite popular among children, teens and adults. This week, we put both DVDs to the test. They are "The Art of Knitting" and "The Art of Knitting and Crochet 2."
Cost and where available: Suggested retail price: $19.99 each. We found both DVDs at Michaels Arts and Crafts. Check other locations for availability. "The Art of Knitting" DVD is available for $15.99 on Amazon.com. Both are available at www.yarnmarket.com for $24.80 each.
How it worked: "The Art of Knitting" DVD offers solid instruction in basic skills - casting on, knitting, purling, picking up dropped stitches, and adding and decreasing stitches, plus how to knit and purl in the continental and American styles.
The instructors demonstrate the techniques slowly and repeatedly, giving new knitters the opportunity to see the action clearly.
"The Art of Knitting and Crochet 2" reviews knitting basics, adds intermediate skills and gives a foundation in crochet, as well. It also includes a sock workshop.
Would I buy the product again? Yes. The DVDs are handy to refer to when trying new patterns and maneuvers. My only complaint is that the hat pattern shown in the beginners' DVD omits instructions for the section between the ribbing and the crown.
One more thing: The DVDs aren't just instructional; they offer information about yarn types and the spiritual side of knitting, plus music to knit by.
