CEDAR CITY -- A suicidal 40-year-old man, upset over a recent breakup, shot himself while in a standoff with a police SWAT team and was rushed to Valley View Hospital, according to the Cedar City Police Department.
The man's condition is unknown at this time.
The man was armed with large caliber rifle and he had barricaded himself in a car on Center Street at 200 East Tuesday night, according to police.
A SWAT team was on the scene while negotiators talked to the man. Center Street was closed between 100 East and 400 East during the standoff.
The incident began at about 7 p.m., when the man's father called police to tell them his son was suicidal. Police located the man on Cedar Mountain and tried to make contact. The police spiked the tires of the man's car as he drove into Cedar City.
The man crashed into an Iron County Deputy's vehicle, but no one else suffered injuries, police said.
