LEHI -- Traversing Traverse Mountain is about to get tricky.

Beginning Sunday, two of the three main access roads to the master-planned community will be closed for three months as part of the Timpanogos Highway reconstruction project.

The Utah Department of Transportation will be shifting traffic on Timpanogos Highway (state Route 92) from the existing roadway to newly constructed commuter lanes. Because of the distance and difference in elevation between those new lanes and Triumph Boulevard and Morning Glory Road, the two roads will be closed until late April.

"Closing roads for an extended period of time is never our first choice," said Bryan Adams, the UDOT program manager in charge of the project. "We explore every alternative and possibility. But in this case, the closures were the safest course of action for all concerned and will allow us to complete our work in the area much faster and more efficiently."

The shifting of traffic to the new lanes will begin Sunday morning and continue throughout the day. Flaggers will be directing traffic during the switch, and motorists should expect delays.

"Our contractor has intentionally chosen to make the traffic switch on a Sunday in hopes that we can be sure everything is functioning and fully in place before the intensified demands of the Monday morning rush hour," Adams said.

Lehi city officials approved the closures of Triumph Boulevard and Morning Glory Road, with the condition that the roads reopen by the end of April.

The $148 million state and federally funded Timpanogos Highway reconstruction project will expand the road to five lanes -- two in each direction, with a median. Commuter lanes will be added between Interstate 15 and Highland Boulevard, allowing vehicles to flow between the two major roads without stopping at traffic signals.

Timpanogos Highway is the main east-west corridor for the communities of Alpine, Highland, Cedar Hills and northeast Lehi. It's expected to be complete in the fall.
