OREM -- A Mountain View High School senior is organizing a conference to help the poor through apps. The "Hacking Poverty Conference" will encourage developers to create apps that help those normally left behind in the technology world.

Organizer Zach Stay says he got the idea after reading about an event in the San Francisco Bay Area called "Random Hacks of Kindness." That gathering brought tech giants like Google and Microsoft together to develop technology to help emergency crews in natural disasters.

Stay says Utah's business community is the perfect place to fight poverty.

"There's dozens of computer technology companies in Utah, and I thought we could take advantage of those to help fight poverty," he said.

Stay says ideas for software include apps for doctors in third-world countries and tsunami warnings for remote areas.

"Maybe even if just one person in a small community has a phone, that will be able to help the entire community," he said.

Engineers from Adobe, Perfect Search, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are meeting at Mountain View High School for two days of collaboration. The event is free and open to the public on Jan. 21 and 22.
