SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) is asking parents to be involved and volunteer at their children's schools as part of Parent Engagement Month.

Gov. Gary Herbert joined with the Utah PTA to proclaim January as Parent Engagement Month.

"Studies show that students of involved parents earn higher grades and test scores, enroll in higher-level programs, are promoted more often, attend school more regularly, have better social skills, show improved behavior, and adapt well to school," the PTA said in a written proclamation, which was signed by the governor. In support of Parent Engagement Month, the PTA says it is hoping to encourage parents to volunteer at their children's schools in traditional or non-traditional ways.

Principal Sandra Buendia supports the movement. "It's just being able to think outside of the box in terms of what parental involvement is and really asking the parents, how do you want to be involved?"

One way the PTA is trying to get parents involved is the Three for Me program, which aims to get parents to commit at least three hours a year at their children's school.
