SALT LAKE CITY — A Midvale attorney charged with stalking an employee in his own office was bound over for trial Thursday after waiving his right to a hearing on the evidence.

Harold W. Stone III, 33, waived his right to a preliminary hearing before 3rd District Judge Joseph Fratto on charges of stalking, a second-degree felony, four counts of felony discharge of a firearm and obstruction of justice, both third-degree felonies.

Following the waiver, Fratto bound the case over for trial on all counts. Stone will be arraigned Jan. 31.

A warrant for Stone's arrest was issued in July after charges were filed in the case. He turned himself almost two weeks later.

Investigators say Stone was stalking his former sister-in-law who is also an employee at the law firm Stone & Law, where Stone works. She continued to work there, even though the stalking reportedly had been going on for more than a year.

Investigators said they became aware of the stalking situation June 2 when someone shot out the windows of a condominium at 7265 S. 1950 East where the woman used to live. She had moved out just three months prior, according to court documents.

The woman had been telling co-workers about the shooting shortly after it happened when Stone, her boss, "admitted to the shooting at her condo," according to court documents.

The woman told police that prior to the shooting, Stone had "contacted her by phone on multiple occasions while intoxicated and has said he has romantic feelings for her and has made sexual remarks to her," court documents state.

After the shooting, Stone continued to text and call the woman. During one of those contacts, he said the two of them should get "couple's counseling," even though the woman said she was not in a relationship with Stone, according to court records.
