BOUNTIFUL -- A fight at Viewmont High School erupted during the middle of the school day Monday. Now a former student who had stopped by the school is in the hospital and police have arrested three other students.

Spencer Spilman was back at the school to visit a former teacher when he became involved in the fight between groups of students from Viewmont, Bountiful and Woods Cross high schools. The argument was initially over a girl, but it had built throughout the day.
"The texting and phone calls had gone on throughout earlier that morning," Bountiful Police Lt. Solomon Oberg explained Tuesday.
It reached the point where the students from Bountiful and Woods Cross left class in the middle of the day and went to Viewmont. The groups argued in the parking lot, then moved inside the school.
Spilman ended up facing off with three students: two from Bountiful High, one from Woods Cross. When it was over, he had a serious head injury and was flown to the hospital.
Monday night, police arrested the three students -- all juveniles. They're being held on charges of aggravated assault.
"The extent of his injuries played a big part of that," Oberg said.
Meanwhile, Davis School District officials say suspensions for the other students involved are likely.
"As school administrators, there's absolutely no tolerance for any sort of fighting," said district spokesman Chris Williams. "We've seen kind of an increase this year, and we hope it doesn't continue."
There is a resource officer at the school, but the police department said the fight happened so quickly it was over when he arrived and the damage was done
Police said more charges could be filed.
