SALT LAKE CITY -- State Rep. Carl Wimmer is taking steps that could pave the way for him to run for Congress.

Wimmer, R-Herriman, has formed an exploratory committee that would allow him to hire staff and raise money for a potential run.

Wimmer has talked in the past about possibly trying to get elected to a U.S. House seat. His first choice would be Utah's new 4th District seat, but Wimmer is waiting to see how the boundaries for the new district turns out.

Wimmer says he has enough grass roots support to run for Congress, but campaigns are expensive.

"We know we have the grass roots support, but do we have the other capabilities, the ability to run an organized campaign, the ability to raise the money? That's why we're starting so early," he says.

He plans to wait for a few months to see how successful his fundraising efforts will be before announcing whether or not he'll run for Congress.
