WASHINGTON COUNTY -- Search and rescue crews have suspended the search for a hiker who fell while climbing in Washington County's Snow Canyon Sunday.

Authorities said three hikers were on the "Island in the Sky" trail Sunday when one of the individuals lost their footing, falling several feet down.

The other individuals were able to call for help, but due to darkness and rugged terrain, crews were unable to mount a rescue effort, according to Det. Nate Abbott of the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

The canyon is located approximately eight miles northwest of St. George.

Abbott said rescuers would begin their search at daybreak using a helicopter and climbers. Thus far, authorities were unable to determine the status of the fallen hiker.
