FARMINGTON -- A Layton man died early Saturday after apparently dozing off and crashing his vehicle while driving home from work.
Marcello Torres, 56, was driving northbound on Legacy Parkway near Farmington around 11:45 p.m. Friday when he fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into the concrete base of a light pole, Utah Highway Patrol trooper Todd Johnson said.
Torres was critically injured and had to be extricated from his vehicle, but was conscious enough to tell troopers that he had fallen asleep while driving home, Johnson said. Torres was transported by medical helicopter to University of Utah Hospital, where he died approximately two hours later.
Torres was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and was the only passenger in the vehicle. His was the only vehicle involved in the crash.
