PROVO — Provo Mayor John Curtis has appointed Capt. David Bolda as interim police chief.

Bolda will take over for Craig Geslison, who is retiring at the end of the year, while the city conducts its search for Geslison's replacement.

Bolda has been with the Provo Police Department for more than 23 years and has served in all areas of police work.

"The search for a new police chief is going to take some time; it's an important decision and we want to do it right," said Curtis. "Captain Bolda's experience will provide the continuity we need as we undergo this transition."

Geslison stepped down Dec. 6, less than a month after Curtis hired an outside auditing firm to look into the operations of the Provo Police Department after a series of cases involving officer misconduct and complaints about the integrity and leadership of the department.Geslison served with the department for over 32 years.

The appointment is effective Jan. 1.
