SALT LAKE CITY - The postal service is hoping that more options will keep post offices from getting too crowded. Monday Dec. 13 and Monday Dec. Dec. 20 will be the busiest mailing days of the year.

More than 800 million cards and packages will be processed on the 20, nearly double the average daily volume. The busiest delivery day will be Wednesday, Dec. 22.

In an effort to cut down on the crowds, 30 post offices along the Wasatch Front have installed automated machines in their lobbies where customers can purchase stamps, weigh and mail cards and packages 24 hours a day, using their debit or credit cards. Postal service consumer affairs manager Ron Hubrich says you can also use shipping centers at supermarkets, or usps.com.

"You can do so much at home. Click and ship, you can order package supplies, print the label, ship it, free carrier pickup," said Hubrich. "If you ship online there are also some discounts you can get."

The postal service says Utahns will save between 3 - 11 percent when shipping online compared to Post Office retail prices, and receive free delivery confirmation.
