PROVO - This week in Cougars Classic, we end our countdown of the 13 most important wins in BYU history. No. 1 as decided by KSL viewers was a 1984 national championship victory over the Michigan Wolverines.

Prior to the game, Michigan's coach Bo Schembechler said: "We're not going out there with the idea that we are cannon fodder for Brigham Young. We're going out there with the idea that we're going to beat them."

Playing in front of 61,000 fans in the stadium and millions watching at home on ESPN, the number one Cougars had a chance to make history against the Michigan Wolverines in the Holiday Bowl.

The game didn't start out well for the Cougars, with Robbie Bosco being sent to the sidelines after a knee injury in the first quarter. Bosco managed to return to the game in the second quarter to help the Cougars make the first score of the game.

Following a touchdown by the Cougars, BYU struggled to hold on to the ball, turning over the ball six times, allowing Michigan to build a 17-10 lead.

With only 14 minutes left in the game, an injured Bosco led a courageous rally to tie the game at 17. With the game tied at 17, the Cougars would get the ball on their own 17, with 4:36 left in the game. Bosco slowly led the Cougars into the redzone.

Facing third and four on the Wolverines 13 yard line, with 1:23 left on the clock, Bosco scrambled out of the pocket between defenders to throw for a game winning touchdown.

The touchdown gave BYU the title of national champions with a team that wasn't even predicted to win the WAC at the start of the season.
