SALT LAKE CITY — A Manga man has been charged with aggravated assault for punching a corrections officer and breaking his jaw, according to charges filed Wednesday in 3rd District Court.
In June 2010, Michael Twine, 27, was being temporarily held in the Salt Lake County Jail before being moved to the Utah State Prison for a drug conviction, according to court documents. A corrections officer entered Twine's cell to perform a random cell search, when Twine punched him in the right jaw, charges state. The officer was temporarily knocked out and fell onto Twine's bed.
When other officers arrived to assist, Twine yelled about leveling the officer and knocking him out, charges state. The corrections officer suffered a fractured jaw that had to be wired shut as a result of the punch.
Twine was charged with aggravated assault with injury by a prisoner, a first degree felony.
He was also charged Wednesday with assault by a prisoner, a third degree felony, for punching a fellow inmate in the eye and knocking him out, charges state.
Twine is currently serving a sentence of 0-5 years in the Utah State Prison for a drug conviction.
