SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) -- Brock Reichner scored 18 points as Brigham Young beat Washington State 76-68 on Tuesday night at the Spokane Arena.

Brigham Young (1-1) got its first win under new coach Dave Rose, a longtime assistant to Steve Cleveland who took over when Cleveland jumped to Fresno State. The victory broke a string of three consecutive losses to WSU.

Washington State (1-1) got 23 points from junior college transfer Ivory Clark, on 8-of-10 shooting, and 13 from Derrick Low.

Brigham Young jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never trailed.

Clark scored seven of Washington State's first 15 points in the second half, and the Cougars closed to 51-48 on Low's 3-pointer with 8:28 left.

But Fernando Malaman's 3-pointer closed a quick 7-2 run to give BYU a 58-50 lead. Malaman finished with 14 points.

The teams traded baskets and WSU edged closer. But Reichner's 3-pointer lifted BYU to a 68-61 lead with 3:25 left and his team was able to fend off WSU the rest of the way.

Washington State did not make its first field goal -- on a turnaround jumper by Aron Baynes --until there was 16:25 left in the first half. Washington State eventually went on an 11-4 run and tied the score at 20 on Kyle Weaver's 3-pointer with 6:36 left in the half.

Consecutive 3-pointers by Reichner and Lee Cummard and a basket by Reichner gave BYU a 28-20 lead, and Brigham Young held on to lead 34-30 at halftime.

Clark had 10 in the first half for Washington State, including seven in the final four minutes, but the Cougars trailed despite shooting 62 percent from the field.

For the game, Brigham Young shot 55 percent and WSU 54.8 percent.
