SALT LAKE CITY -- "It's all about the hair" rings true for Disney's new animated feature "Tangled" -- at least for part of the film.

It's based on the fairytale "Rapunzel," and actress Mandy Moore gives voice to the princess in the tower. But clearly this Rapunzel is no damsel in distress, waiting for a prince to rescue her.

"In our story, she's the one who wears the pants," Moore says. "She's the heroine. She rescues the guy more often than not. Flipping it like that, not having the guy sort of leading the girl, I'm all for that."

"Tangled" is set in a magical kingdom. It includes unusual characters and musical numbers, but Moore says she is delivering a definite message to young women.

"Rapunzel has been told that it's her 70 feet of magical hair that makes her special, when in reality it's something she's had within herself all along," Moore explains.

"Tangled" is Disney's 50th animated film. Moore loved them growing up and now has become part of the family, the industry.

"All the toys and the Halloween costumes and the bed sheets - I know my parents are going a little crazy with everything, too," she says.

Moore was amazed when she realized her performance in a Disney film will be remembered by generations to come.

"It's cool. It really is certainly something," she says. "Years and years from now I'll be able to show my kids and grandkids, and I'm really proud of that."

Moore was in Utah to promote the movie on Friday.

"Tangled" opens in theaters in digital 3-D Nov. 24.
