(KSL News) -- A medical innovation promises to make extra pounds melt away, and patients who've tried it are singing its praises.

The practice is called mesotherapy. A specialist injects a patient with a mixture of drugs designed to dissolve fat.

Mesotherapy experts say the active ingredient in the drugs is a natural medication called lecithin. Some patients even say the injections also get rid of cellulite.

Sandra Keys, Mesotherapy Patient: "It's big body changes where you see the most."

Luis Angarita, Internist: "The most weight is about 120 pounds. It took about, almost a year."

Mesotherapy has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

The injections cost thousands of dollars and some plastic surgeons won't practice mesotherapy until it's been proven safe and effective.
