SALT LAKE CITY -- U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood was in Utah Wednesday afternoon to officially announce a major $26 million investment in Salt Lake City's new streetcar project.
"Salt Lake and this region will be a model for livable, sustainable communities and really getting this community back into the streetcar business," LaHood said.
The money was awarded to Salt Lake City, South Salt Lake and the Utah Transit Authority last week to build the Sugar House streetcar project.
The new line will be about two miles long and will run from the Granite block area in Sugar House to the 2100 South TRAX station in South Salt Lake. Construction will likely begin in 2012.
