SALT LAKE CITY -- The BYU graduate who brought "Napoleon Dynamite" to the big screen is now bringing the character back to life as a cartoon.
Fox has ordered a first season of a "Napoleon Dynamite" cartoon series. The writers of the 2004 film, Jared and Jerusha Hess, are on board.
"You know, the film was kind of a live action cartoon in some aspects," Jared Hess says, "so the transition into animation has worked out quite nicely."
Hess knows there are no guarantees in the TV business so he can't promise it will have the staying power of a cartoon like "The Simpsons," but he and his wife will work with veteran Simpsons writer and producer Mike Scully on the new Napoleon.
Hess says animation has some advantages, in that you can write things without having to worry about the expense of special effects - it takes the same amount of effort to draw a spaceship as it does a car.
