SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah's Hogle Zoo is celebrating baby elephant Zuri weighing in at more than 1,000 pounds.

The zoo celebrated the African elephant's first birthday in August with toys, presents and a large cake.

She is the first baby for 23-year-old Christie and the first African elephant born at the zoo. At 1,000 lbs, Zuri weighs a fraction of what she will one day, but zoo officials say the weight is a milestone that shows her continued growth and progress at Utah's Hogle Zoo.

The public voted to help pick Zuri's name, which means adorable or beautiful. Nearly 10,000 ballots were cast and among five choices, Zuri picked up nearly half the votes.
