WEST HAVEN — Four people walking to a corn maze Friday night with their LDS church group were struck by a pickup truck and seriously injured.

Just after 8:30 p.m. two males, ages 23 and 19, and two women, both 21, were walking along 2550 South near 1900 West in West Haven trying to get to the entrance of a corn maze, when they were hit by a pickup truck driven by a 23-year-old man, said Weber County Sheriff's Sgt. Lane Findlay.

The 19-year-old was "clipped" and thrown into the females. The other man was hit in the middle of the truck and tossed onto the windshield, Findlay said. Investigators did not believe the women were hit directly by the vehicle.

The group was not hit while changing a flat tire as was originally reported by Weber County dispatchers.

The four were part of a larger young adult LDS singles ward from the Kaysville-Layton area.

The 23-year-old man was taken to McKay Dee Hospital in serious condition with two broken legs, a broken arm and a broken neck, Findlay said. The other man was listed in "guarded" condition at Ogden Regional Medical Center with head and leg injuries, he said.

The two women were taken to McKay-Dee Hospital with head and rib injuries. Findlay said they were not injured as badly as the men.

The driver of the pickup stopped after the accident. The victims were walking on the side of the road in a dark area. The driver, "for whatever reason, didn't see them," Findlay said.

There was no initial evidence of alcohol being a factor, he said.

The cause of the crash was still under investigation late Friday night. Findlay said the area was busy with lots of people going to the corn maze.

"They're all going to make it," he said. "It could have been much worse."

The driver was not cited Friday night.
