MILLCREEK -- A wild scene on Salt Lake County's east side occurred Thursday when a hit-and-run accident turned into police cars being rammed, shots fired and a woman tasered.
About 10:20 a.m., Unified police were notified of a hit-and-run accident near 3900 South and 500 West. Responding officers spotted the suspect vehicle en route to the accident and followed it, said UPD Lt. Don Hutson.
The car was occupied by 32-year-old Heidi Bawden and a 43-year-old male passenger. The car followed the speed limit but ran through a red light and disobeyed other traffic laws, he said.
Police followed the suspect vehicle but were not involved in a high speed chase, Hutson said.
Near 3300 South and 1300 East, Bawden pulled behind an office building and went down a ramp toward an underground garage. That's when UPD officers moved and boxed her in, Hutson said.
The male passenger surrendered immediately. Bawden, however, stayed in the car and disobeyed commands of officers, Hutson said.
She then put her car in reverse and slammed a police car, drove forward and hit the closed garage, and then continued driving back and forth, slamming between the garage and the police vehicles.
One officer fired five to six shots at the tires and engine block to try and stop Bawden, Hutson said. When that didn't work, officers approached the vehicle, and two officers tasered her through the window, he said.
Bawden was taken to St. Mark's Hospital to be checked out and was expected to be booked into the Salt Lake County Jail. The male was being questioned by investigators.
