Utah high school football has reached the halfway point of the season and we are starting to see the contenders separate themselves from the pretenders.
This week's 5A poll remained the same. No. 2 Cottonwood enjoyed a bye week while the rest of the top 5 took care of business in week five. There is sure to be movement next week as No. 3 Davis and No. 5 Northridge meet Friday night in a Region 1 clash. Bingham remains a unanimous choice at No. 1 and they are joined in the top five by Region 3 rival Riverton who comes in at No. 4.
Shumway came up big in the biggest 2A game of the year leading his team to a huge victory over South Summit. On offense Shumway completed 17 of 27 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns. Then on defense he recovered a fumble 45 yards for a score that put the game on ice.Taylor Eyring RB Alta
Eyring ran for over 200 yards and four touchdowns in the Hawks 35-16 win over rival Brighton.Tanner Curtis QB East
Curtis led the Leopards 43-3 defeat of region 6 rival Olympus by rushing for 242 yards and three touchdowns. All three scores were longer than 70 yards.Kyle Larsen RB Provo
Larsen had 217 yards and 4 touchdowns. One score was an 80-yard run and another came on a 78-yard run as the Bulldogs crushed Timpanogos 41-6Nick Burns Cedar
After the Redmen cut the Pine View lead to one with :27 left in the game, they called the fake field goal and Nick Burns made sure the gamble paid off. Burns dove across the goal line for the game winning two-point conversion as the Redmen upset the Panthers on the road.
It comes as no surprise that Timpview remains a unanimous No. 1 pick by the 4A coaches. Mountain Crest holds on to the No. 2 spot while the rest of the poll has changed. East made a strong statement Saturday by crushing previously No. 5 Olympus 48-3. They move up to No. 3 followed by another pleasant surprise at No. 4, Westlake. The Thunder remains undefeated in just their 2nd year of competition. A win at home Friday against Orem would set up a battle of top five undefeated teams on October 1st when the Thunder host the Thunderbirds of Timpview.
Rounding out the poll at No. 5 is Springville who just edged out Bountiful in this week's poll.
Juan Diego secured their claim on the No. 2 spot in 3A with a 21-14 road win over Morgan. The Trojans drop to No. 4 in the poll behind No. 3 Cedar. The Redmen pulled off perhaps the most thrilling victory of week 5. Down a touchdown late against 4A Pine View, Redmen quarterback Carson Ludlow connected with Jon Jones for a 10-yard touchdown with 27 seconds left to bring Cedar within one point. Instead of kicking the extra point and going to overtime, they went for the win. Nick Burns kept the ball on the fake extra point and dove across the goal line for the game winning score.
Hurricane remains at No. 1 while Bear River makes their season debut in the top five edging out undefeated Richfield for the final spot in the poll.
There is no doubt who is No. 1 in 2A after Friday night. San Juan stands alone atop the 2A poll after sharing first for the past three weeks with South Summit. The Broncos made the long trip to Kamas Friday and left with an impressive 26-6 victory over the Wildcats. South Summit is now No. 2 followed by Millard who took care of rival Beaver to claim the No. 3 spot. Enterprise is back in the poll at No. 4 followed by Beaver at No. 5.
