SALT LAKE CITY -- New signs are popping up on America's roads designed to keep drivers alert.
We all have our driving distractions. Cell phones, stereos, GPS devices and even kids can take our eyes off the road. So some states are trying to combat those distractions by providing another one: signs with flashing lights.
In Kansas City, Mo., city officials installed stop signs with the flashing lights around the edges. AAA spokeswoman Rolayne Fairclough says the idea spread to a crosswalk in Boise, Idaho.
"Pedestrian striping that lights up in a sequence," she says. "There's no way you're going to miss that."
Fairclough says engineers are doing all they can to make the roads safe. But the signs are not cheap. Stop signs can cost thousands of dollars. However, Fairclough says it may be worth it.
"Sometimes you have areas that are prone to crashes and, at that point, they may be cost effective," she says.
