WEST VALLEY CITY — The driver of a 1940s "Legend" car rolled his vehicle on the oval strip at Rocky Mountain Raceway and had to be extricated from his car Monday night.

Spectators at the West Valley raceway, 6555 West 2100 South, were watching the Doomsday Trailer races involving four different types of vehicles just after 8 p.m. when the "Legend" car was clipped by another racer and spiraled out of control.

Emergency responders freed the driver, a 60-year-old man, from the vehicle and took him away on a stretcher. Dispatchers initially called for a helicopter but canceled it after the victim regained consciousness.

The racer had a couple broken bones and facial injuries, and he was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment, West Valley Police Lt. Dalan Taylor said.

"He was wearing all the safety gear," Taylor said. "Our biggest concern was he had a hard time breathing."

No one else was injured and Rocky Mountain Raceway employees were setting up for the next race after the victim was transported away.
