UTAH COUNTY -- A rollover crash involving two cars on northbound Interstate 15 is causing major delays in Utah County.
The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. just north of the 1600 North exit in Orem. Troopers say the 23-year-old driver of an SUV was speeding at well over 70 miles per hour and weaving in and out of traffic before his vehicle rolled and ended up in a construction pit.
The driver was ejected from the vehicle when it crashed into the pit, where crews are installing a drainage system. He suffered compound fractures to both legs and was flown to the hospital in critical condition.
Before that driver rolled, his SUV clipped a BMW, causing it to roll as well. That driver is also in critical condition.
The northbound lanes were shut down while a medical helicopter was on the ground. A backhoe was brought in to lift the SUV out of the pit and onto a tow truck.
As of 5 p.m., all lanes in both directions were open, but drivers were still experiencing significant delays.
Troopers are strongly suggesting drivers avoid the area or find alternate routes.
