SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- As more Utah judges retire and fewer qualified people apply -- one committee believes they have the answer.
Yesterday, the Citizen Committee on Judicial Compensation proposed a more than two-point-seven (M)million dollar salary boost for the state's judges and Supreme Court justices.
Committee members say the reason qualified applicants are NOT applying is because they can make more money in the private sector.
Committee member Scott Anderson says the proposed raised would help close the gap between judicial salaries and what top attorneys can make.
No action was taken yesterday by the commission, which gives the Legislature salary recommendations for judges, department heads and elected officials.
The commission is expected to finalize its annual report at its next meeting on October 31st.
