At this year's Salt Lake County Fair, along with the usual rides and blue ribbon desserts, people will see an emphasis on literacy.

Organizers have arranged for discounted carnival rides and parking, hoping that fairgoers will donate the difference to the Jordan Education Foundation.

John Bergman with the Small Smiles Reading Program said, "This is a cause that we saw as worthy with the Jordan School District to help them out with the crisis, with all of their budget cuts, cutting their programs."

The Salt Lake County Fair will host school literacy day Thursday. Fair activities include story time for kids -- and organizers encourage people to donate books.

The fair takes place through Aug. 14 at the Salt Lake County Equestrian Park at 2100 West 11400 South in South Jordan.
